Attende, domine
Commissioned by The Clerks of the Cardiff Oratory Schola in 2023, Attende Domine, is a penitential setting of a lenten text. Incorporating and contrasting new material with the original Gregorian chant ‘Attende Domine’, the composition aims to realise the profound grace of God's mercy, framing humanity's sinfulness within a context of redemption and hope.
The piece was premiered in February 2024 by the Oratory Schola, and was performed again by vocal octet Contrepoint in March 2025, in Birmingham Cathedral, as can be heard in the above video.
℟. Attende, Domine, et miserere, quia peccavimus tibi.
Ad te Rex summe, omnium redemptor,
oculos nostros sublevamus flentes:
exaudi, Christe, supplicantum preces. ℟.Dextera Patris, lapis angularis,
via salutis, ianua caelestis,
ablue nostri maculas delicti. ℟.
℟. Hear us, O mighty Lord, show us your Mercy: Sinners we stand before you.
To thee, Redeemer, on thy throne of glory:
lift we our weeping eyes in holy pleadings:
listen, O Jesu, to our supplications. ℟.O thou chief cornerstone, right hand of the Father:
way of salvation, gate of life celestial:
cleanse thou our sinful souls from all defilement. ℟.
